Just wondering what's everyone's rides are going to be.
I was going to get a Road Bike but decided that I can use my old trusted XC mountain bike and just get some skinny road tires for it (I'm donating the cash instead).
Is road bike a must? I'm a mountain biker and ride my mountain bikes on the road all the time, but the knobbies will not hold up for this long ride.
I'm going to be using a road bike. I recommend a road bike if you can get your hands on one as my own unscientific comparison is that a road bike is about 1/3 again as fast as a mountain bike with knobby tires when giving the same effort. That would translate into maybe being an hour faster completing each stage.
A road bike certainly isn't a must though, I used to do long road rides (70-90km) on a mountain bike with knobby tires during my university days without any problems. A road bike just makes it easier. Hard to go wrong with keeping the old bike and donating the savings!
Road style handle bars are much more comfortable on a long road ride. More positions to choose from and more natural wrist position. Used to have a "flat bar road bike" but traded up to a "real" road bike for this reason. Could also try mustache bars...
I am using my 10 yr old Gary Fisher, full suspension downhill mountain bike with road tires. Like you, I will donate the cost of a road bike. As they say, this is not a race and I am used to riding long distances on this bike albeit at a slower pace.
