Looking for anyone from Courtenay or Campbell River area who are riding this year. This is my first time, and I am not a cyclist by any stretch, so I am a little nervous, could use some buddies.
Hi Eden, I took part in the event last year and had a great time. I am not much more than the weekend warrior, but I love to ride. The event is set up so that anyone can take part. The main reason is to raise money for the cause. Last year I saw many people on all types of bikes. They ranged from high end road bikes, to the average $200 mountain bike bought 20 years ago from Canadian Tire. There were also 3 Unicycles that I saw, a couple of recumbants, and even a 3 wheeled delivery cart with only 1 gear. I heard that most people crossed both finish lines with little to no help. They give you about 12 hours each day to ride and after that they pick you up. If you run into any difficulty either mechanical or physical, there will be somebody to help you out. My only suggestion to you is to get used to being in the saddle for some time. And try to push your comfort zone, not ride up Mt Washington twice a day, but maybe tackle Ryan rd once or twice before the ride. There wasn't a single hill as bad as Ryan rd, but if you can climb that monster you should be fine. And work up to it. You can do it. If you have any questions take to somebody at the website, or at your local bike shop. And lastly for your comfort, if you don't already have them go out and spend some money on a pair of bike shorts...worth every penny. Hope this helps. Jamie
Thanks Jamie, I appreciate the encouragement. I am try to train and work up to a good distance and length of time, so far 30km is as far as I've gone. Not sure if i'm ready for Ryan road yet, but it's on my agenda.
