Carbs, carbs and more carbs Pasta (whole wheat is better), bread (bagels are good), potatoes, bananas, dates, pretzels (no kidding... you get salt and carbs. No sports drinks needed. Look for the ones with zero fat.) After the ride eat within the hour which aids recovery from all that work you've put your body through.
I phoned the ride office last week to talk about the food they are serving for the riders. If you have to eat wheat free, like me, it was recommended to bring your own food. The meals sound very nutritious but all wheat based, ie. bagels, muffins, wraps, sandwiches and pasta. I was happy to hear that they have refrigeration facilities for people, who have to bring special food along.
