Buying a Bike - help!!

Hi Guys,

I'm participating in the scrap it program in order to get a new bike for this ride - I am at a loss though.  I went to the local bike shop and the guy showed me two bikes and expected me to make a decision.  I would like some more advice if possible!

My backgroud:
I'm very novice but would like to be able to ride to work in the summer (about 40km).  My fitness level isn't amazing, so I would like a bike that won't hold me back anymore then I'm holding me back.  I sometimes get lower back pain so I'm worried about the position on a road bike - does it cause a lot of back strain?

So here are my questions  confuse
Hybrid or Road?  Is there really much difference?

Any suggested bikes in the 1000$ range

What are the most important components to look for?

I've read about SPD's and know that a lot of float is important for long distance rides.  But... I don't know how much is a lot hmm

advice

Thanks!!

Hi Aimee,

My first suggestion is to find a bike shop you like and feel comfortable with. There are plenty around town and bound to be a few close to either your home or your work.

A good bike shop and sales person should be able to take all your questions and concerns and find a couple of good solutions. They should also let you take the bikes out for test rides.

At your price range, you should be able to find a pretty good bike with good components. Personally I would look at a commuter bike or a touring bike. Definitely take some out for test rides and then it should become pretty clear what fits you the best.

Look in the "Outfitters" section of the Ride webpage. It lists bike shops that are supporting the Ride, good place to find shops in your area.

Enjoy the process !!

Good luck,
Richard

Aimee, if you are looking to buy a road bike go visit the friendly folks at Bicyble Sports Pacific. I just picked up my road bike for the rid this past weekend and they were very helpful with my rookie questions and have lots of choice and pretty good prices.

Just an update - I did it :)  I picked out a bike and I get to pick it up on Monday :)

I would like to highly reccomend the guys at Mighty Riders, they really took the time to fit me and talk to me about what I needed to do to get into this sport.

Great experience overall

Thanks for the advice

Hi Aimee,

Do you mind sharing what you ended up going with. I am currently having the same debate and am not sure which way to go. Thanks!

I picked an opus sibelius - it's a road bike and it's made all the difference!
