This year I am not going to rig a fanny pack to my handlebars - big mistake. I have been researching handlebar bags and trying to find a compromise between Canadian Tire types and the real high-end ones. Quick release important - any recommendations from your experience? Any used ones for sale?
It all depends on how much room you need and the type of bike you are riding. Last year I used the Bull Handlebar Bag from MEC ($7.50) on my road bike. It didn't fit perfectly but I was able to make it work because I also had a bento box attached behind my handlebars on the top tube (bag for jels or snacks). I was able to attach the velcro straps from the bento box to the bottom straps of the Bull Bag and it held on securely. There was enough room for a camera, spare gloves, extra snacks and a small rain jacket in the Bull Bag). I used this set up successfully for the Ride to Conquer Cancer and the Canada Day Populaire (a 144 km ride 10 days after the RTCC).
If you want to carry more than that another option might be a bicycle frame bag depending on the size of your bike and whether you are willing to give up one of two water bottle holders. Alternatively, a full on handlebar bag but as you probably know, they run around $40-50.
After much angst I did get a handlebar bag. It will make it easier to eat and will hold my booties which are a pain in a jersey. Also room for a small camcorder to capture the ride. I hate the idea of ruining aerodynamics but hey - this isn't the Tour! Good ideas all - thank you.
